Recipe for Crispy and Tangy Southern Fried Green Tomatoes!

Green tomatoes are coated in a crunchy cornmeal and flour mixture and fried till golden brown to make the wonderful Southern dish known as "fried green tomatoes." Here is a straightforward method to prepare this tasty treat:

Ingredients:

- 4-5 firm, immature green tomatoes

- One cup of all-purpose flour

- One cup of cornmeal

- salt, 1 teaspoon

- 1/2 teaspoon pepper, black

- A quarter-teaspoon of cayenne pepper (optional; adds a little heat).

- 1 cup ordinary milk or buttermilk

- Cooking oil made from plants

Instructions:

1. Thoroughly wash the green tomatoes and dry them with a paper towel. Slice the tomatoes into rounds that are 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick after removing the stem. Place aside.

2. Combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using) in a shallow dish or basin. To make the coating mixture, thoroughly stir.

3. Transfer the buttermilk to a another small dish.

4. In a sizable skillet or frying pan, heat up about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Sprinkle a small amount of the cornmeal mixture into the oil to test its readiness; if it sizzles and bubbles, the oil is hot enough.

5. After uniformly coating each slice of green tomato with buttermilk, dredge it in the cornmeal mixture and gently press to seal the coating to the tomato.

6. Carefully insert the slices of green tomato coated in oil onto the heated pan. Don't overcrowd the pan; doing so could lower the temperature and result in soggy tomatoes.

7. Fry the tomatoes until they are golden brown and crispy, which should take around two to three minutes per side. If they brown too soon, you might need to reduce the heat to medium.

8. After the fried green tomatoes have reached the ideal crispiness, remove them from the oil and set them on a plate covered with paper towels to absorb any extra oil.

9. Continue until all of the green tomato slices have been cooked.

10. As an appetizer, side dish, or even as a tasty snack, serve the fried green tomatoes hot. They go nicely with a variety of dipping sauces, such as ranch or remoulade.
